After studying at the University of Zagreb, Njiric + Njiric established their own offices there in 1996, and they are now teaching at the Graz Architecture School in Austria. In 1995, they participated in the competition for the Yokohama Port in Japan. They submitted a building whose only facade is the roof and whose four glazed sections are perceived as being thick plating rather than the planes of the facades. The limits between this building and the ocean are virtually erased. Inside, water filters down via aquariums suspended through openings in the roofing. On these aquariums, videos of giant fish are projected on liquid crystal display screens, thus creating a virtual reality. The free-style "minimalism" characterising the voids used by Njric + Njiric leads to a complex reflection about the relationship between urbanism and nature. In 1997, their Hortus Sanitatis project in Zagreb had the styling of a "compressed garden", as well as that of an urban passageway opening out into the landscape. In their critical esteem, architecture should elicit new forms of social behaviour.

In the age of media and global production, architecture abandons its stylistic or canonic limits and enters the field of profane civic services. Qualifying it by speed, colour or smell, means stepping away from the realm of professional exclusivity, towards efficiency of the free market. Touching off a wide range of association, architecture by colours is a kind of topological survey of field conditions, more than a typological concern. The greens represent the whole variety of such options. Standard green for the landscaped sites, supergreen for the recycled ones. Understatement green for the areas of minimal impact towards nature, ultragreen for the extreme conditions given. Fake green as an exercise on artificiality of environment, forbidden green for the zones of limited access and platonic consumption. Blue for aquatic strategies, becoming purple to update the inert and heraldic. Yellow stands for openness, modesty and Sachlichkeit in social housing. Harnessing infrastructure, taking advantage of it, understanding and supporting the urban dynamic, its flows and speeds, is what orange register stands for. Time, as the fourth dimension, essential for contemporary design, puts colours in motion, subject them to the daily or seasonal change or weathering - distorted, fragmented, blurred, rippled, multiplied, pixelated, stylized, textured, interlaced.
The projects shown tackle the themes such as those of dis-continuity, subversive lite-ness and programmatic inexactness, examine the interdependency of signs, the apparent breakdown of ideologies, question the modern legacy and validity of monofunctional systems, stressing the interchange modes, being interactive themselves, too, via various plateaus and different epidermal depths : the soft fabric of church elevation in Zagreb, lit up at night, the ever-changing multicoloured layers of the urban hill in Den Bosch, slopes and the "inhabited" glazed sections of the Yokohama project, protectiveness and independency of different field conditions in Glasgow or herbal nature of elevations as condensed gardens of pharmaceutical faculty in Zagreb, all polemize the viability of concepts, on one hand interactive and event-ual, or unstable and generative on the other, understood as an accumulation of strata, performing the new urban presence.
The scary accumulations of the web city are taken to their limits in order to leave a fair amount of the territory over. Beyond the post-architectural there are notions of nature, occasionally collonized or simply used as a camping site for global tourism.
Territories of immense densifications, architecture-free zones, landscaped environments and the residual ones, constitute the trajectories of the present-day urban concerns : to initiate (Zagreb), to prepare (Den Bosch), to stir (Yokohama), to condense (Zagreb), to re-shuffle (Glasgow) - as possible key-words of a new (secret) vocabulary...

Yokohama burning, International Port Terminal, Yokohama, Japan, Competition 1995

For Yokohama, Nijric&Nijric imagined an "electronic raft", compulsivelly combining several components : a shipyard-like structure (congested, of technically pregnant sides, fluid in the middle) ; water as a material (typology of wet voids elevations as an accumulation of aquaria) ; stalactites (the water "leaks" in the form of basins suspended through the strips on the roof) ; a system of Routes : the Civic Route, the Speleological Route (under the "stalactites"), the Marine Route (urban divers), the Zig-zagging Route (surfers) etc ; the living pixels (a system of low-current electric grid makes possible to organize fish for desired elevational messages) ; a urban park (a floating fragment of hard-core Coney Island of the new breed) ; Glass as a structural material, paper for the divisions ; Japanese "naturalism" and high technology as elements of Yokohama's cultural legacy for the 21st century and beyond.

VISKOVO TOWN PLANNING - Viskovo, Croatie, 1997-Competition 1996 (1st price)

Organizing the (concentric) slopes as a fine synthesis of dwelling, working and agriculture, the project proposes a balance between the built substance and structured voids. Such a traditional typology mutates into a number of organisational patterns. Rural aspects concentrate on occupation modes of the land : fields cultivation, formal gardens, open public space and civic facilities (playgrounds), extensions of dwelling or work forecourts/backyards. Organisation of section is a functional zoning - with workzones towards the street and dwelling ones oriented to the quiet, internal areas. What was once used as a living upstairs/working downstairs-complex, is now appropriated to the new, centrifugal and sloping layout : one lives downstairs and works upstairs. Circulation between the slopes is conceived as a network of bypasses, enabling the propulsivity in times of traditional, seasonal festivities, taking place along the main road.

Hortus Sanitatis - Zagreb, Croatia - Competition 1997 (third price)

As a compressed landscape - logical, internalised and compact extension of the neighbouring botanical garden - the building unfolds into the park and marks an urban passage. It is crossed by the "routes" : daily route as the shortest and most efficient way for professors and students, "bellevue" route for the visitors, public route as an open path through the house, homeopathic route as an itinerary through the suspended herbal gardens. In-between zone, the facade is a gradual transition into the landscape - homeopathic and anthroposophic gadgets within the intermediate zone, comprising also additional classrooms, ramps, staircases, etc. The choice of plants is related to the orientation of the glasshouse - evergreens in the north, continental vegetation in the south, mediterranean sorts in the west. Sponsored object - the herbal zone and the glasshouse as a series of possible donations of pharmaceutical industry and an expression of particular corporate identity for the bio-pharma faculty.

Baumaxx Hypermarket - Maribor, Slovenia - 1997-98

The urban concept consists of reversing the figure/ground ratio of american hypermarkets or perimeter centers, celebrating the traffic by cutting the regular pattern into the irregular plot contour. It is strenghtened by the green roof substance, as a new elevated ground, publicly accessible. All inward-bound planes are entirely glazed, all perimeter ones are mute, but user-friendly. Four billboards anchor the vast slopes of the building to the site and address themselves to the drivers. Colour "classification" is an attempt to handle architecture by ordinary, if not banal, criteria - size, smell or colour. Even the glazed elevations exploit the properties of insulating wool as such. Njiric&Njiric are using its yellowness as a part of the Baumaxx corporate identity, attaching simply the red logos onto it and slightly blurring them with corrugated lexan-sheets: colour as a marketing strategy.

ATOM HEART MOTHER - Glasgow, Scotland, Competition, Europan 4, 1996 (1st price)

The title of the project represents a possible coherence of interfering site complexities, a reaction to the severe social context, the psychodelia of suburban and protection needs. Whith this archipelago of short terrace islands/clusters, Njiric&Njiric give a new strategy for inhabiting the landscape by creating a housing campus in a park-like setting. The islands offer a variety of occupation densities for the site, which are shown as flexible, congested alternatives to the low density solution proposed in the brief. Tessenow 2000 is an image for the garden city of tomorrow - protective patterns combined with landscape, as a generative category, as a policy for the 21st century environment. The dwellings themselves, are designed as basic structures in a "raw" state, which can then be elaborated in discussion with building authorities and/or future residents as a new, non-linear, circumstantial social topography.
