After attending the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam, Winka Dubbeldam finished her studies in Manhattan (Columbia University) where she set up her Archi-Tectonics agency in 1994. She teaches at Columbia, in particular in the "paperless design studios", and is keen to contribute to the development of the architect's methods and concepts--on the one hand by incorporating the new digital technologies within the design process, but also by making repeated cross-disciplinary detours: mathematics, philosophy. Her architectural praxis, which is based on a radical re-examination of established knowledge, goes hand in hand with a continuous programme of theorization and research. When dealing with the specific question of housing, Winka Dubbeldam develops a line of thinking about topology in its both spatial and temporal capacity to organize complexity. By updating the idea of an organic architecture, she sees, in this investigation, a way of reconciling the many and disparate conditions of this type of programme. |
