(CHINA) | Architect and designer Gary Chang, who graduated from Hong Kong University in 1987 went into association with Michael Chan (Edge) in 1994, and then set up his own agency in 1998: Edge (HK) Ltd. Edge symbolizes that porous rim, to do with interface, which Gary Chang intends to establish between all the different scales of our contemporary environments. Between the object, the "interiorspace" of architecture and the urban territory, he refuses to recognize intellectual and methodological breaks, and attempts, on the contrary, to intensify exchanges and relations--relations which are, in his view, already tangible in the labyrinthine morphology of the Hong Kong megalopolis, which he describes as a "liquid city". The complexity which Gary Chang looks for in his projects is not endogenous; it is imported from one scale to another, and it is deterritorialized; from city to architecture (cineplex, Chongqing, 1998), and from object to house ("Suit-case House", Shui Guan, 2000), etc. Chang's constructed work, which is rare and sophisticated, is the outcome of this rigorous approach to research and experimentation which undermines accepted practices. |
