As project director for seven years (1992-99) in the Coop Himmelb(l)au Agency in Vienna and Los Angeles, Tom Wiscombe was the architect of the UFA Cinema Building project in Dresden, which was completed in 1999. In that same year, he founded Emergent design in Los Angeles, which is today associated with Coop Himmelb(l)au for the Musée des Confluences competition in Lyon. Emergent design is conceived as a "strategic partner" rather than a mere design agency. Tom Wiscombe does not broach architecture from a critical angle, but rather responds to the upheavals brought about by technological developments through the constructed form. He thus aims at an architecture of simultaneity combining bodies and networks, economics and ecology; an architecture of heterotopia resulting from the complex weft of economic, cultural, geographical and constructive relationships. A graduate of UC Berkeley and UCLA, Tom Wiscombe has taught at the Southern California Institute of California (SCI-Arc), at the University of Applied Arts (HAK) in Vienna, and at Woodbury University in Burbank. |
