(SP) The architect Vicente Guallart has been based in Barcelona (where he founded his own agency in 1992) since 1988, and divides his time between teaching and research (Polytechnic University of Barcelona), multimedia production (RA CD Rom collection for NEWMedia Productions) and organizing exhibitions (Metapolis). His architectural projects involve a dual extrapolation--both from the landscape and geographical scale, and from the digital world of new information technologies. In his quest for a possible habitat, Vicente Guallart actually sees in architecture a means of continually rethinking current changes, be they territorial or technological. Over and above the real/virtual split, Guallart explores the potential of the natural/artificial dialectic in his projects. On the one hand, objects of nature (trees, rocks, etc.), and geographical forms (islands, mountains, etc.) are conjured up as possible urban and architectural forms. On the other hand, the new media, considered as a new "nature", introduce us to an artificial ecology capable of steering the conception of physical spaces.
