Kovac's projects, which are neither sculpted nor modelled, define a "third term", to borrow Léon Van Schnaik's term, where the architect works not only the construction material, but also the empty space, the cavity, trying to regard the formalization of space as the real meaning of architecture. For this architect, hailing from Slovenia and based in Melbourne, Australia, since 1970, the surface thus becomes the preferred instrument of this spatiality which has an outstanding plastic quality; it also becomes the at times highly technological matter of a intentionally deep architecture where we find a combination of concern for light and a renewed concern for fluidity, in a spirit of deliberate levity. Tom Kovac founded the Kovac Architecture Agency in 1990 in Melbourne, where he also founded the Curve Architecture Gallery in 1994. He is a graduate of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and obtained his MA in Architecture in 1997. |
