LOT/EK architecture (a sound-alike play on low-tech) is a design agency run by Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano, a pair of Italian architects who graduated from the Architecture Faculty at Naples University in 1989, and Columbia University in 1991. Based in New York City -in Lower Manhattan to be precise- they divide their activities between architectural projects, stage installations, exhibitions and publications. Drawing their inspiration from the art avant-gardes of the 1960s, Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano play with an ingenuity that involves the borderlines between erudite culture and popular culture. They stay away from functionalist conventions and uses, and focus on experimenting with new forms of housing, offering a greater modularity and a flexibility that is heightened by the iconoclastic use of eclectic elements -be they organic, manufactured, or electronic- stemming from the present-day industrial and technological landscape.
