Helena and Hrvoje Njiric graduated from Zagreb University in the late 1980s and set up their agency in the Croatian capital in 1996. Njiric & Njiric, who have come to notice in various major international competitions ("Yokohama Port Terminal" (1995), etc.), are currently managing several major projects in Zagreb and Maribor. The "Baumaxx Hypermarket", a shopping centre that was completed in 1998 in the Slovenian capital, and capsizes every convention for the genre, is a good example of the mixture of pragmatism and inventiveness which hallmarks their architecture. Where habitat and housing are concerned, Njiric & Njiric have participated in various competitions (Europan 4, 1996; Viskovo Urban Planning, 1996) and come up with several experimental projects. These projects, lying at the crossroads of architecture, city-planning and landscape, propose contemporary garden city systems, combining privacy and sociability, and nature and architecture, in a very tight relationship with urban and metropolitan logic and the natural topography.
