(NL) | NL Architects is made up principally of four architects who have been working together since the early 1990s, and who have been officially associated since 1997. All four of them studied at Delft University, even though they lived in Amsterdam. As such they regard themselves as self-taught people who have acquired their training during their endless travels. They came to notice at a very early stage as a result of provocative propositions, even though their projects encompassed the most everyday varieties of urban reality. They unfailingly come up with answers to the most restrictive of programmes and make the most of necessity with the wit and the sense of paradox which are their hallmarks. The housing project they are presenting here is located in Amsterdam's historic centre, and is one of the responses, among various others, made by eight different architects to the Het Funen masterplan put forward by Architekten Cie. The apartment block designed by ML is situated in the middle of the overall building plan. The important thing for them was to make it possible to individualize the housing units. The project complies with the standards and norms in force, but interprets them: the average measurements are retained volume-wise, but the deformation of the overall envelope and the diagonal layout of the inner way stretch and squeeze the spaces, thus lending them a total diversity. |
