(NL) NOX is not an architectural agency in the traditional sense of the term. Lars Spuybroek is just as busy producing videos, books, magazines, websites and multimedia installations. The technological revolution ushered in by computers no longer allows people, in his view, to stay within the boundaries of a single discipline. The computer is not so much a simple representational tool, but rather an instrument which blazes trails to another world; by cultivating linkage, superposition, and interaction in data systems which it would have been impossible to put together before, NOX escapes from the usual logical systems of architecture. It makes use of every kind of technique and technology and applies them both in the creative process and in the final product, which are inseparable. He focuses on the idea that information should not intervene at a particular moment of the design, but rather that it is part of a process which is permanently structuring the forces in question, within an interactive system. In his project "Off the Road-5 speed", he dovetails different scales and speeds--those pertaining to the human and the urban--culminating in the implementation of a new system for defining a neighbourhood, consisting entirely of industrialized though completely different houses, responding to individualized lifestyles. It is a system which nevertheless retains a certain unity in terms of urban development.
