Based in Graz since 1987, Riegler and Riewe have designed several housing projects, as well as Graz Airport, while at the same time pursuing international teaching careers. For Riegler and Riewe, the architects task consists in "developing precise but open structures, which function as a frame for the complex flow of images of their use". They hereby declare that their work has less to do with architecture itself than with its use and evolution in time. In Archilab they will thus be showing their completed housing projects, as well as photographs of Bas Princen which in a way tell the story of these dwellings. In so doing, Riegler and Riewe raise questions about the reach of the abstract in the development of the real. Their housing units often deal with an in-between space which can be attached, willy-nilly, to the living-room or the kitchen, giving free rein to appropriation. Drawing on structuralist language, but avoiding the pitfall of the monumental, the architecture of Riegler Riewe develops stripped-down geometries, a painstaking attention to detail and sophisticated materials, even in very cheap housing units, like the Strassgang homes in Graz where the sliding shutters, made of nylon fabric, subtly modulate the repetitive and static structure of the façade. |
