New York-based su 11, architecture + design is a forum dedicated to conceptualization and experimentation in architecture and design. su 11 is run by Ferda Kolatan, Erich Schoenenberger, and Tamara Beudec. Their work includes urban studies, architectural projects, residential and service sector alike, and furniture. It is informed by active research, both theoretical and practical, dealing with the incorporation of new programmatic developments connected in particular with the rapid emergence of technological interfaces in interior and urban landscapes. Composite Housing is a study of a prototype of prefabricated housing units for Great Central Valley in California. Multi-purpose units, which they call "Add-On's", the form of which is greatly determined by their function (kitchen, bathroom, fireplaces, etc.), can be added on at will and in a reversible way, using a simple wood or steel frame. These units, which are available in catalogues and on the Internet, are designed with a view to mass distribution, ready to be incorporated--like "architectural furniture"--in any kind of construction, old or modern, and as such playing with their rigorous and customary rectangular geometry.
