(NL) Joep van Lieshout is a graduate of the Rotterdam Art School (Mogeschool voor de Kunsten). Since 1995, his artistic activities have been undertaken under the aegis of the Atelier Van Lieshout, which is located in Rotterdam, and is manned by 15-20 people. His work has been shown in many solo and group shows; it is also represented in several international collections. Joep van Lieshout is involved with real space, using tools which are not the tools of art. By upsetting the symbolic value of art, he projects a use and a usage for the work. He reintroduces the do-it-yourself concept of the 1970s, and campaigns for a desire for independence and self-determination. With his AVL-Ville project, currently under construction in the port of Rotterdam, he is taking his options to the limit. Here he is constructing a free zone, a village for himself and his employees, with the aim of turning it into a place where life will be autarkic. AVL-Ville even has its own flag, its own constitution and its own currency.
