Nick West is a new media researcher who focuses on the
interplay between interactive technologies and the surrounding physical
environment. Currently he is working with Proboscis, a London-based think
tank and creative studio, to develop Urban Tapestries. Urban Tapestries
is a research exploring social and cultural uses of the convergence of place
and mobile technologies. This software will allow people to create annotations
of any spot in the city using text, pictures and sounds. Anyone passing
these spots can then read the annotations using wireless devices like mobile
phones or PDAs. As an adjunct professor at New York University, Nick West
managed a research project for Viacom that investigated the feasibility
of viewing location-triggered websites on portable wireless devices. For
the National Fine Arts Museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Nick West designed
travelling museum exhibits utilizing Global Positioning Satellite technology.
As manager of a joint research project for New York University and New York’s
regional phone company, Nick West investigated virtual communities via a
live interactive TV show, which was broadcast on Manhattan Cable TV. He
presented his reasearch results at several conferences throughout Europe
and North America. He is studying towards a PhD in Cultural Studies from
Golsmiths College, London, studying the effects of a new media technologies
on our evolving conception of urbanism. |
